Linux to keep rail deliveries on track in China

China's Ministry of Railways (MOR) has chosen Linux to centralize its package delivery operations, according to Turbolinux Inc.

MOR has signed a deal with Turbolinux to provide the Linux operating system (OS) and related applications, including the company's TurboHA high-availability server support application, which was developed by Turbolinux in China, the company said in a statement.

The system will process 95 percent of the freight volume handled by MOR, which totals approximately 200 million parcels each year, Turbolinux said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The MOR package delivery system, which integrates postal services and rail transportation, will cover 14 provincial railway bureaus, 230 railway stations and more than 440 package delivery service facilities, Turbolinux said. Under the terms of the contract, Turbolinux will provide 300 copies of its server product and TurboHA, which will be installed on 160 servers, it said.

The Turbolinux-designed system will offer tracking and package delivery management functions, upgraded security measures that employ password-based authentication, and will provide package-delivery information to the public, Turbolinux said.

In addition to MOR, Turbolinux's Chinese customers include China Petroleum and Chemical Corp. and the Shanghai Futures Exchange, according to the company.
