Oracle, 3Com team on Palm Computing line

Oracle and 3Com are joining forces to bring database access and management to handheld devices.

Palm Computing, a 3Com company, will become part of the Oracle Alliance Program, jointly developing and marketing Palm Computing platform software, which allows real-time remote access to Oracle databases, the companies announced yesterday in a statement.

The Oracle Lite client database and the 3Com Pilot III and PalmPilot handheld devices will be integrated so that existing Palm Computing applications and data can be replicated, synchronised and shared with the Oracle8 database server.

The partnership is expected to lead to a range of products and services, with a conduit development kit for Oracle the first in the series, due out in beta in August. The kit will allow data to be synchronised safely with a shared Oracle database server, advancing the network computing capabilities of Palm Computing devices, the companies said.
