Eclipse board names new members

The Eclipse Board of Directors, which guides the Eclipse open source development tools platform, on Wednesday announced four new members, which expands the board to 12 members.

Elected were Todd Williams, of Genuitec; John Wiegand, of IBM, who serves as Eclipse Project Lead; Rich Main, of SAS Institute; and Bjorn Freeman-Benson of the University of Washington. Previous members include Ronald Ingman, of Ericsson; Michael Rank, of Hewlett-Packard; David Thomson, of IBM; Jonathan Khazam, of Intel; Jim Ready, of MontaVista Software; Dan Dodge, of QNX Software Systems; Michael Bechauf, of SAP; and Boris Kapitanski, of Serena Software.

Originally a consortium formed when IBM released the Java-based Eclipse Platform to open source, Eclipse recently was incorporated as an independent, not-for-profit organization. Support comes from 58 member companies.

The recent reorganization is seen as a way to give IBM less of a controlling interest in Eclipse. Some analysts have seen the move as a way of broadening the project's appeal among software vendors.

Sun Microsystems recently considered joining Eclipse but declined.
