Cosine enhances Customer Network Management software

Cosine Communications Inc. is rolling out new features for its Customer Network Management software so service providers can supply service-level agreement reports for their business customers, report firewall activity and mine data about individual customers' use patterns so they can better tailor new services.

Data gathered by Cosine's IPSX service switches is passed on to the CNM, which can store it as PDF files or as structured XML to fit into whatever database the service provider chooses.

Reports on the performance of individual customers' services can be made available via a Web portal. Initially the reports measure availability and packet loss. Latency will be added later, Cosine says. Firewall monitoring includes availability and throughput, as does monitoring of network VPN services. The measurements are made among IPSX switches at the edge of providers' networks.

In addition, the new software gathers statistics about firewall activity such as attacks, time of attacks, the nature of the response and the frequency and duration of various types of sessions such as HTTP and FTP. The software also gathers policy and configuration data so providers can monitor the settings on firewalls, VPNs, virtual routers and virtual interfaces in the IPSX gear.

All the data gathered is made available to provider back-end systems such as billing platforms and operations and support systems for analysis of network traffic and customer use of services. These can be used to develop new services or special pricing offers that the carrier thinks might be attractive based on analysis of customer activity.

The new software features are available now.
