Lenovo replaces CEO with Dell executive

Chinese PC vendor Lenovo replaced its CEO with an executive from Dell Inc.

Lenovo Group nabbed an executive from Dell to replace the chief executive officer it gained from IBM after it purchased that company's PC division earlier this year.

China's largest PC vendor appointed William J. Amelio as its new president and CEO, Lenovo said in a Tuesday statement. Amelio, who served as president of the Asia-Pacific region including Japan since 2001 for Dell prior to his new appointment at Lenovo, replaces Stephen Ward, who headed IBM's PC division before it was bought out by Lenovo.

Amelio has already taken over, Lenovo said.

Ward has agreed to stay on and assist in the leadership transition as a consultant to Lenovo, the company said.

The change is meant to accelerate Lenovo's next phase of growth, the company said, since the integration of IBM's PC division remains on track.

"Bill Amelio's combined experience -- in our industry, in emerging and mature markets, in senior operational roles and with IBM -- gives him the perfect profile to lead Lenovo from the important stability we have achieved in the first phase of our integration, to the profitable growth and efficiency improvement to which we are committed in our next phase," said Yuanqing Yang, the chairman of Lenovo, in a statement.

Amelio worked at IBM from 1979 to 1997 in a range of positions, including general manager of worldwide operations for IBM's PC division, according to the Lenovo statement.
