First Linux-only retail store debuts

The first Linux retail computer store will have its grand opening this week, giving Linux enthusiasts an opportunity to preview and purchase the latest Linux products. Sub500.com, in Toronto, opens its doors on June 26, and features Linspire-based laptops and desktops and the latest Linspire add-on software.

"This is a historical event for the Linux industry and it provides the computer user a full range of affordable desktop Linux products under one roof," said Michael Robertson, chief executive officer for Lindows.

"Customers will receive personal attention from Linux experts at the store to educate them on the benefits of Linux versus other operating systems and help them with their Linux purchases."

Businesses, educational institutions and computer enthusiasts can purchase the latest Linspire desktop ranging in price from C$299 (AU$317) to C$979 (AU$1037) and laptop models available from C$1,111(AU$1,177.08) to C$1,444 (AU$1,529). Depending on the user's needs, Sub500.com offers a wide range of desktops including the BusinessStation, DesktopSystem and SchoolSystem. Ultralight and deluxe laptop models pre-installed with Linspire 4.5 are also available.

Linspire add-on software packages start under C$50 (AU$53) and include Linspire Plus, which contains hundreds of games, graphics, photo editing and personal finance applications; Linspire Office, the latest StarOffice suite from Sun Microsystems complete with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software and compatible with Microsoft Office; Linspire VirusSafe, offering protection from unwanted and hazardous viruses; and Linspire SurfSafe, a web filtering tool to eliminate offensive Internet content.

Sub500.com will also offer its customers a full service center for computer repairs and upgrades. Computer accessories, including network cards, LCD monitors, compact flash cards, and memory can also be purchased at the store.
