Telstra Corp. Ltd. will launch the I-mode mobile Internet service in Australia through a partnership with I-mode's developer NTT DoCoMo Inc.
I-mode provides subscribers with access to rich content, e-mail, games and other applications and services through their mobile handsets.
Telstra will work with local and international content partners and developers to make their services commercially available to Australian I-mode subscribers, Telstra said in a statement Thursday.
Telstra did not give details of price or handset availability, or when the service will be launched.
The agreement means that I-mode is now available in three countries in Asia-Pacific and 10 countries worldwide. Apart from NTT DoCoMo in Japan and Telstra in Australia, I-mode operators include E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH (Germany), KPN Mobile NV (Netherlands), Far EasTone Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (Taiwan), BASE NV/SA (Belgium), Bouygues Telecom SA (France), Spain's Telefónica Móviles SA (Spain), Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA (Italy) and Cosmote Mobile Telecommunications SA (Greece).
