Dell expands 64-bit offering with four-way Itanium

Dell is expanding its 64-bit server line with a new, four processor Itanium 2 server aimed at high performance workloads such as databases, engineering clusters and heavy duty ERP applications.

The 4U PowerEdge 7250 joins the two-way PowerEdge 3250 in Dell's stable of 64-bit options. The server maker has not introduced a server based on Advanced Micro Devices's 32-/64-bit Opteron chip, but has said it plans to roll out boxes based on Intel's 32-/64-bit chip when that is released sometime in the next few months.

Dell executives said the PowerEdge 7250 was designed to provide reliability and scalability available in proprietary RISC platforms, but in a lower-priced, standard Intel design.

The server was aimed at running Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP and SAS for large organizations, Dell said. It was also designed to support high-performance computing clusters for financial services, life sciences, oil and gas exploration and digital animation.

The PowerEdge 7250, available now, includes up to four Itanium 2 processors with 6MB of cache, up to 32GB of memory, 8 PCI-X slots and comes with factory installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 AS.

Pricing for the PowerEdge 7250 starts at about $US12,500 for a configuration with one 1.3 GHz Itanium 2 processor, 3MB of cache and 2 GB of memory.
