Telstra launches portable satellite ISDN service

Telstra yesterday launched a portable ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) satellite communications service in Asia, the company said in a statement.

The MiniSat multimedia system is designed to give mobile users in remote locations the ability to communicate at a data transfer rate of 64K bits per second. The system is initially expected to be used in industries like broadcast media, oil and gas, mining, aid relief, and offshore manufacturing, the company said.

The data transfer speed will enable remote users to carry out videoconferencing, LAN/WAN access, fast file transfer, e-commerce, Internet browsing and e-mail as well as fax and voice facilities. Packet data service will be available from the 5-kilogram (11-pound) MiniSat terminals in the middle of 2000, Telstra said.

Last week, Telstra and Koninklijke KPN NV of the Netherlands announced the merger of their global mobile satellite businesses in order to strengthen their position in the global mobile satellite communications market
