Subway goes mobile with NZ application

Take-out food chain Subway NZ has deployed a locally-developed mobile ordering solution which could be rolled out around the world.

The service allows customers to order Subway products from a menu-driven system installed on their phones.

The service was conceived and developed locally by Altaine Ltd. and complements existing TXT and Web ordering.

"The mobile phone is no longer just a tool for calling and texting; it hasn't been for some time," said Warren Tobin, Altaine's managing director in a statement. "These multimedia devices are carried by virtually everyone and many consumer goods companies are now trying to figure out how to engage with customers, using this technology. Those that don't will be left behind."

He said interest in the software is high in Subway around the world. The same package of services will be rolled out in the U.K. and opportunities are developing in other locations.

In addition, another large quick-service restaurant in the UK has commissioned Altaine to develop and implement similar technology for worldwide launch in early 2008.

Altaine is a New Zealand-owned mobile technology company with clients in the U.K., U.S., Asia and Europe.
