IBM adds Linux section to DeveloperWorks Web site

IBM here Tuesday announced it has beefed up its developerWorks Web site by adding Linux and Web architectures, changes that come directly from suggestions made as part of a visitor survey.

DeveloperWorks, which is still in beta testing, is a free online resource that lets programmers get access to tips, tools, technology-specific search engines, and emerging technology code, officials said.

The new Linux section is supported with a variety of different resources including a new Linux JVM and technology preview of the Linux version of IBM's Visual Age. Also included is a library of articles about Linux pulled together from a multitude of sources.

A team is also planning to include a section with tutorials on how to use Linux in corporate environments that will take advantage of IBM's expertise in helping developers solve their more thorny problems.

The Web architecture section will also take advantage of the some of IBM's work in areas such as e-business applications. It will include dozens of technical articles, how-to features, source code, and tools.

A third section, dedicated to Unicode, will highlight information on creating an application that can be localized for a specific country without having to make any changes to an application's code. This section will include resources such as an introduction to Unicode along with white papers and excerpts from a book written by members of an IBM Unicode team.

Unicode, which is a character set that covers all of the world's languages, is considered by many to be an important cornerstone to software internationalization.
