If you have a dollar to spare you can get in on the ground floor of MightyBell, a new social network company spearheaded by Gina Bianchini, formerly head of social website company Ning.
MightyBell is offering access for $1 to the beta version of its application, which is designed to encourage people to "define and share an organized series of step-by-step, day-by-day actions grouped as 'experiences' for others to join and complete." (Yes, it's sounds pretty involved, though supposedly the interface is slick...you can get a little sense of that from the website.)
If you don't want to fork over a buck, you can still sign up to be on a waiting list to try out the app. Currently MightyBell's app is for the iPhone, though Android and other platforms are expected to be supported.
Bianchini has become a high profile Silicon Valley exec in recent years, headlining events such as MIT's annual EmTech conference for entrepreneurs and cracking the cover of magazines such as Fast Company and Fortune. She generated buzz as head of Ning, a company that has enabled organizations to form millions of private Facebook-like communities, though after 5 years at the helm she stepped down in March of 2010 to join Netscape creator Marc Andreessen's venture capital firm as an entrepreneur in residence. Andreessen was chairman of Ning during Bianchini's tenure at Ning, and he remains in that role.
Palo Alto-based MightyBell, which is privately funded, hopes to entice "creators" to join its program by developing experiences that others will take part in. The creators will have a chance to make money off their expertise by offering "premium" experiences that will generate revenue to be split between the creator and MightyBell. The startup has created tools for tracking and displaying metrics for those participating in experiences, such as training for a marathon or going on a survival hike into Yosemite National Park.
MightyBell gets its name from the concept of bells bringing people together and being used to celebrate success.
