New iPad gets raves from survey and Consumer Reports

Owners happy with their product

Overheating issues? Easily breakable? "Whatever," say consumers. The new iPad is still the best tablet around.

According to a new survey released today by ChangeWave, 82 per cent of new iPad owners are very satisfied with their new tablet, while 16 per cent say they're just somewhat satisfied and 2 per cent said they were somewhat unsatisfied. No one ChangeWave surveyed said they were very unsatisfied.

FLASHBACK: iPad rivals not up to snuff, says Consumer Reports

These numbers represent an improvement over a survey of iPad owners taken in February where 74 per cent said they were very satisfied while 23% said they were somewhat satisfied. In fact, the new iPad is so popular among users that one of the two major complaints about it has little to do with the device itself but rather the cost of subscribing to a wireless data plan, which 23 per cent of new iPad users said they disliked most about the device. Twenty-six percent, meanwhile, said that the overall price of the new device was their biggest dislike.

As far as what users liked best about the new device, it's really no contest as 75 per cent said they liked the high-resolution Retina display more than any other feature.

In more good news for Apple, Consumer Reports today said that the device is now the top-rated tablet on the market. Among other things, Consumer Reports said the new iPad provided "the best rendering of detail and color accuracy we've ever seen on a tablet display" and remarked that the new device's performance was "superb in virtually every other way as well." Consumer Reports also had praise for Verizon's LTE network for delivering "very fast, dependable connectivity" on the new iPad.

Consumer Reports' recommendation is particularly significant since that publication was the first to perform tests showing that the new iPad could run as high as 116 degrees Fahrenheit if used intensively for 45 minutes. Consumer Reports also caused a minor headache for Apple back in 2010 when it said that it could not recommend the iPhone 4 due to its well-publicized design flaws where users would find their reception cut off if they gripped the device on its lower left-hand side.

Apple's new iPad has garnered critical praise ever since its release last month, as critics have gushed about its Retina display that features an industry-best tablet screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The new device also features Apple new A5X chip that delivers dual-core CPU processing and quad-re GPU graphics processing. The new iPad is also the first Apple device to come with LTE connectivity.
