Transport Scotland has launched a three-month Wi-Fi trial on ScotRail's Edinburgh to Glasgow service.
During the £250,000 trial, people travelling on ScotRail's busiest commuter route will be able to access the web for free.
The Wi-Fi capability will be enabled using Nomad Digital's R3200 router and Icomera's X6 router, which will connect to the major phone networks simultaneously and split the available bandwidth across the networks at any given moment. An Ethernet backbone will be fitted to the train with the aid of inter-vehicle jumpers so that passengers can access the internet from all three carriages with minimal service degradation.
The trial is part of the Scottish Government's aims of rolling out Wi-Fi to all of the country's rail network, and throughout Scotland.
Transport minister Keith Brown said: "Business organisations have been very clear that Wi-Fi access on commuter routes would boost competitiveness in Scotland and this pilot is the first step to delivering that.
"We are working towards bringing the internet to every corner of Scotland, including ensuring people can get online even when they're on the move."
Users of the Wi-Fi service will be encouraged to provide feedback on the trial via an online questionnaire, which will inform the next stages of the Wi-Fi rollout.
ScotRail will report its findings to Transport Scotland in the autumn.
Meanwhile, in London during the Olympic Games, Virgin Media Business will be providing free Wi-Fi at 80 tube stations.
After the Games, Transport for London (TfL) and Virgin are considering creating pre-paid travel cards that include access to Wi-Fi.
