Telstra customers now have 4G coverage in Hong Kong after it signed an international roaming agreement with Hong Kong CSL.

As part of the agreement, CSL customers may also roam onto the Telstra 4G network when travelling in Australia.

The announcement makes Telstra the first Australian telco to offer 4G LTE international roaming. The first-place telco previously offered 3G roaming for customers travelling abroad.

Telstra said 4G international will be priced the same as 3G roaming, and it is working on similar agreement with operators in other countries that have compatible 4G networks.

“This introduction means Telstra 4G customers visiting Hong Kong will experience improved service when using features such as video streaming, surfing the net or downloading large files on their mobile device wherever CSL has 4G coverage,” Telstra executive director of networks and access technologies, Mike Wright, said in a statement.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is currently considering a draft international mobile roaming standard to prevent bill shock when consumers are overseas.
