Twitter has acquired Brisbane music startup We Are Hunted, the startup confirmed.

“While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team,” We Are Hunted wrote on its website Friday.

We Are Hunted will soon shut down the site and close all users accounts, it said. The website charted top new songs based on popularity on blogs and social media.

“There's no question that Twitter and music go well together,” it said. “Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can't wait to share what we've been working on at Twitter.”

For now, the Brisbane startup is keeping mum on what exactly it’s doing with Twitter. However, the announcement comes amid rumours that Twitter is developing a music service.

“We wish we could say but we're not yet ready to talk about it,” We Are Hunted wrote. “You'll hear more from us when we are.”

We Are Hunted was developed by a Brisbane team in 2007 and launched two years later. The company later moved its headquarters to San Francisco.
