Australia’s national big data strategy should have “privacy by design” as a guiding principle, according to comments received by the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO).
AGIMO just closed its three-week consultation period to collect feedback from industry and the public on a big data issues paper released last month. AGIMO is reviewing the comments and plans to release a final big data strategy in June or July this year.
“The overwhelming majority of the responses were positive and constructive,” AGIMO wrote in a blog post. “This input is now being carefully considered and will guide the development of a Big Data Strategy.”
In the original issues paper, AGIMO stressed that the government is committed to protecting citizens’ privacy. Commenters appear to have strongly agreed with that sentiment.
“Many respondents echoed the points that were raised in the paper about the privacy challenge that big data may represent,” AGIMO wrote.
In addition, many government agency respondents said they wanted the big data strategy to provide guidance on how best to use big data analytics to solve business problems, AGIMO said.
“Many have also indicated that they would like assistance in making the practical links between the technical processes of big data analytics and the business processes that they could help to support.”
