Optus business customers experienced an outage Tuesday morning following hardware issues at the telco's exchange in Ultimo, Sydney.

The unusual outage occurred at around 5:00am this morning and was resolved around 9:30am.

“A hardware issue impacted a router … which caused intermittent dropouts for some Optus Business customers on the Optus Evolve network,” an Optus spokesperson said.

Traffic analysis for the 100Mbps port to Optus at one company showed a complete drop in activity between 5:00am and 9:00am.

A failover 20Mbps port link showed intermittent activity as it struggled to cope with the 100Mbps traffic.

An IT support person at the company said they had not experienced an outage of this kind since July 2012.

Optus said engineers worked with the hardware vendor to fix the problem, but it did not reveal who the vendor was.

“We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused,” the telco’s spokesperson said.
