New Zealand slips in global network readiness index

WEF-backed network readiness index puts NZ in 20th place - ahead of Japan but behind Australia, UK and US.

New Zealand has dropped from 14th to 20th place in this year’s Network Readiness Index (NRI) compiled by the World Economic Forum. The NRI, which according to WEF is designed to assess the capacity of “economies to leverage ICT for growth and well-being”, measures a range of ICT–related parameters including infrastructure, cost of access, skills levels, user uptake and the business and regulatory environment.

This year's index of 144 countries placed Finland first, followed by Singapore and Sweden. New Zealand at 20th place is behind Australia (18th), the UK (7th) and the US (9th) but one place ahead of Japan (21st).

The NRI rates New Zealand highly in the areas of the political and regulatory environment, ranking it 2nd highest globally, but very poorly in affordability, giving it 100th place. The affordability measurement compares mobile and fixed broadband Internet tariffs, and the level of internet and telco competition.

The NRI is part of the Global Information Technology Report, which has been published by the World Economic forum in association with business school Insead since 2002.
