New CIO role created at NZ Police

Position established to further ICT in the organisation

NZ Police is advertising for a CIO, having appointed former ICT manager Murray Mitchell as acting CIO until the newly-created position is filled.

Michael Player, acting deputy commissioner for resource management at NZ Police, says the CIO role was created in the wake of new Police Commissioner Peter Marshall’s appointment in April.

NZ Police “had a look at the executive structure and decided we needed to ensure that the most senior person in ICT has the due title and status that the role is set to fulfil in an organisation of our size.”

Murray Mitchell has held the title of ICT Manager since 2008 and was appointed as a member of the NZ Police executive under former Commissioner Howard Broad, Player says.

Appointing a CIO “is in keeping with industry best practice”, Player says.

The job description for the CIO position states: “The role has significant leadership of approximately 400 staff, with key result areas covering: enterprise leadership, strategy, planning, architectural policies and standards, knowledge sharing, collaboration and synergy.

“This executive role is a second-tier position that supports the Commissioner to strategically manage Police services.”

NZ Police ranked 13th in this year’s MIS 100 survey of the 100 largest users of ICT in the country.
