CloudFlare establishes Australian data centre presence

CloudFlare has opened a Sydney co-location data centre in response to ANZ customer requirements for improved website load times

Hosted services provider, CloudFlare, has opened a Sydney co-location data centre in response to Australia and New Zealand customer requirements for improved website load times.

The facility, based at Equinix's data centre in New South Wales, has been in operation since 25 July.

Web traffic from Australia was been served from CloudFlare's Singapore and Los Angeles co-located facilities.

According to the company's blog, website load times were taking more than 160 milliseconds for A/NZ customers.

"With our new Sydney facility, load times from A/NZ are now averaging under 40 milliseconds," read the blog post.

CloudFlare co-founder, Michelle Zatlyn, told Computerworld Australia that while the company has no plans to work with data centre providers in Victoria or other states at this stage, she said it would consider more co-location data centre services if customer demand continued to grow.

"Australia is constantly in our top 10 countries in terms of traffic through our network which is one of the reasons we expanded there," she said.

"We don't have an office in Sydney yet but we can see the company having several offices around the world over the next two years," she said.

Some of CloudFlare's Australian-based customers include e-commerce company, Endless Wardrobe, financial advice website, Intelligent Investor, and Toyota/Subaru car forum, GT86.
