HP, Datacom, Digiweb suffer datacentre outages

In unrelated incidences both Hewlett-Packard and Datacom experienced outages at their Auckland datacentres on Saturday March 20.

HP says it doesn’t comment on “internal operational matters”, while Datacom won’t say which of its customers were impacted “for security reasons”.

Christchurch-based web and e-commerce hoster Digiweb, which hosts 150 servers, also experienced an outage last week.

Datacom CEO Greg Davidson says that at 1.51am there was a power loss at one of the datacentre floors at the company’s Albany Orbit datacentre.

“The incident was impossible to anticipate as it involved two separate malfunctions in both the primary and secondary power delivery systems,” he says.

“A team of more than 50 Datacom staff, including myself, arrived on site within less than an hour to ensure we restored our customers’ systems to an operational state as soon as possible.

“Approximately one hour after the outage, power was reinstated and the process of restoring power to all customer systems was under way.
