Cingular extends Georgia network

FRAMINGHAM (10/06/2003) - Cingular Wireless LLC this week said it would invest US$80 million in its Georgia networks to add 200 more cell sites to the region.

Cingular has already spent more than $200 million this year to upgrade its voice and data network in the state. Overall, the company has invested more than $1.3 billion in its wireless network in Georgia.

The latest expansion will increase the number of coverage and capacity cell sites the company has throughout the state, Cingular says. About half of the new sites are expected to be operational by the end of the year, with the expansion to continue through 2004, the operator said.

Some of the counties targeted for the new sites are Carroll, Polk, Floyd, Whitfield, Crawford, Cherokee, Gordon, Haralson, Gilmer, Fannin, Coweta, Union, Habersham, White and Lumpkin. Cingular is also adding sites in the Atlanta area to increase coverage and capacity.

Cingular's Georgia network is a GSM/GPRS infrastructure. GSM, or Global Systems for Mobile Communications, is used by 880 million people in 179 countries, or more than 70 percent of the world's total wireless market, Cingular says.

GPRS, or General Packet Radio System, is a data enhancement for GSM.
