The Department for Transport has awarded Azzurri Communications a five year £1 million IP telephony contract, under the Public Services Network procurement framework.

Under the deal, Azzurri will provide professional services, including full project management, design and installation services, user training, a security audit, and a resident engineer for three months following the go-live of the project.

The Azzurri system for the Department for Transport consists of a voice over IP telephony network across two core sites in London and a remote site in Hastings.

The network, based on a Mitel Communications Director platform, will have 2,500 extensions and 100 contact centre agents, supported by 400 unified communication licenses, unified messaging, voice conferencing, call recording and a call logger.

Vim Vithaldas, CEO of Azzurri Communications, said, "This is our first notable success in supplying services and technology to central government."

Azzurri already has local government contracts with Cornwall, Wiltshire and Durham councils. "The PSN framework has helped open up a new route to central government departments," said Vithaldas.

The Public Services Network aims to reduce the cost of communication services across UK government and enable new, joined-up and shared public services for the benefit of citizens.

Social housing provider Your Housing Group recently deployed a new wide area network covering 60 sites across the North through the PSN framework after going to network integrator MDNX.
