Spatial Data Infrastructure project launched

Facility will link siloed geospatial data systems

New Zealand’s disparate geospatial data systems are to be linked together in a spatial data infrastructure (SDI), following the approval of such a move by Cabinet on Monday.

According to the Land Information New Zealand website, “SDI is the technology, policies, standards, and human resources necessary to acquire, process, store, distribute and improve the usability of geospatial data.

“Essentially, [it] is the full framework supporting the supporting the use of geospatial information.”

The SDI will be provided by Land Information New Zealand, through the New Zealand Geospatial Office.

In the first half of next year, the New Zealand Geospatial Office will develop a design and implementation plan for the SDI.

According to the Linz website, “The NZGO will work closely with government agencies, academia, the private sector and community groups to develop the implementation plan.”

Two projects already underway at Linz, an environmental and geospatial data catalogue and a web-based service for accessing Linz data, will be tied in with the SDI.

In a statement announcing the SDI project, Linz chief executive Colin MacDonald says: “Cabinet has signalled that they recognise and support the need to build New Zealand’s geospatial capability, and the establishment of a national SDI will be a vital step in this process.”
