Karen network connects to Gisborne

East Cape region to benefit from bandwidth boost

The Karen network has established a 1Gbit/s connection to the East Cape.

Research and Education Advanced Network of New Zealand(REAANZ)chief executive Donald Clark says this brings unprecedented levels of connectivity into Gisborne, which will support not only the local institutes of technology and polytechnics in learning, but also allow other research and education organisations (schools, libraries) to connect to Karen.

“Gen-i were the supplier of the connectivity, selected after a closed competitive tender process,” he says.

“As part of delivering the innovative Karen service into Gisborne, we have had a positive impact on boosting the delivery of Telecom Wholesale HSNS into the area, which is exactly the sort of multiplier we aim for as we invest public funds.

“This connection was made possible as part of a Tertiary Education Commission-funded (TEC) capital programme, where it co-invested $2m alongside up to $1m from the ITPs to connect seven regional ITPs to Karen, and in turn extend Karen’s footprint.”
