New cloud venture acquires Telarus in New Zealand

Cloud Plus established locally after buyout

Jules Rumsey, the cofounder and former chief executive officer of trans-Tasman, infrastructure-based service provider Telarus, has established a new local business venture called Cloud Plus by acquiring the local business operations of his former company.

Rumsey didn’t disclose the value of the deal, but says he has sold his Telarus shares to business partner Graeme Smith.

Telarus established the local business in late 2008, offering managed services for partners based on its own trans-Tasman network and wholesale services from carrier partners including Telecom, Citylink and Vector.

It had no locally-based staff, but had a point of presence in Auckland’s Skytower.

Cloud Plus is in talks with other carriers to expand the range of services offered. They include managed firewalls, including features such as virtual private network remote access, content control, intrusion prevention and WAN optimisation, and an email security platform.

Other planned services include VMware-based virtual servers and a VoIP gateway. Cloud Plus is also trialling new network access options such as EUBA (enhanced universal broadband access) and VDSL2 through Telecom Wholesale.
