Global data centre provider, Digital Realty Trust, has officially taken the covers off the first phase of its Sydney facility in Erskine Park.

The 8020 square metre data centre features two 1440 kilowatt turn-key flex performance optimised data centres (PODs) with an additional two PODs to be built. According to the vendor, the PODs have a power utilisation efficiency (PUE) of 1.25.

"A PUE number of 1.25 means a sizeable reduction in total operating costs for our customers," said Digital Realty Trust technology vice president Adil Attlassy in a statement.

"This figure can further be enhanced by the adoption of hot or cold aisle containment. We anticipate our customers in Sydney will be interested in working with us to maximise the level of energy efficiency within their data centres."

He added that the facility is certified Tier III with roof-top free-cooling air handling units. According to Attlassy, the built-in cooling infrastructure can also support open architecture-based cooling.

The Erskine Park facility is Digital Realty Trust's first operational data centre in Australia. It is also building a 30,250 square metre facility at the Paramount Industrial Complex in Melbourne. This is expected to be open in 2013 and has been 100 per cent pre-leased to National Australia Bank (NAB). NAB plans to consolidate 30 smaller data centres or computer rooms around Australia into Digital Realty Trust's Melbourne facility.
