Canterbury joins DHB rush for storage

Expected annual increase in storage requirements 30 to 40 percent

Rapidly increasing demand for storage is driving New Zealand district health boards to upgrade or even replace existing systems.

The Canterbury District Health Board is seeking an enterprise storage solution, both to replace current equipment near the end of its life, and to address longer-term storage strategies.

Tender documents note that “based on the growth of our storage capacity over the last three years, our expected annual increase of storage capacity will be approximately 30-40%.”

Requirements include a package that is “sufficiently flexible in its architecture to enable the adoption of new storage technologies for at least the next five years, embraces virtualisation and re-uses, where appropriate, existing equipment.”

Auckland’s health sector also has a major storage initiative underway, with a tender for an enterprise data storage system for healthAlliance - a joint venture between the Counties Manukau and Waitemata DHBs - plus the Auckland and Northland DHBs, currently in progress.

The Canterbury DHB’s current storage hardware set-up is mainly Hewlett-Packard.

The tender document also notes: “While the immediate driver of this RFP (request for proposals) is to reduce the immediate risk occasioned by our existing ‘end of life’ computer storage equipment, we are seeking longer term scalable and flexible solutions to our storage needs, encompassing one year, two year and five year strategies.

“These strategies should address the wider issues of emerging architectural and interconnectivity technologies, and innovative storage options.”
