Australia’s SmartGate system is now live at Sydney International Airport, having been first introduced in Brisbane in 2007.
New Zealand travellers with ePassports can now use the system to pass through border control.
The system uses ePassport data and face recognition technology to automate customs and immigration checks. It is also now available at Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and Auckland International Airports.
SmartGate can be used by ePassport holders aged 18 or over from Australia and New Zealand and will be gradually opened to other nationalities holding ePassports.
The deployment of SmartGate around Australia has been delayed due to a range of technical issues emerging in trials.
