Spotify coming to New Zealand early next year

Music streaming service Spotify is bringing its offering to New Zealand and Australia next year

Spotify, the music streaming service which has taken the US by storm, is now preparing to expand to New Zealand’s shores.

According to sources for music industry blog Digital Music News, there is already a staff presence in Sydney preparing for a launch in New Zealand and Australia, which will likely take place in February.

Postings on Spotify’s jobs page seeking Sydney-based sales managers, business development managers, and PR managers seem to confirm their intention to launch across the two regions.

Spotify has a catalogue of over 15,000,000 songs, which includes music from Sony, EMI, Universal, and Warner Music.

Users of the service can listen to the catalogue for free on their computers. The music is ad-supported but users can pay a monthly subscription which removes the ads and also allows them to stream music to their smartphones.

Spotify was first launched in Sweden in 2008 and is now in 13 countries. In July of this year the service launched in the US, where it gained 70, 000 paid users in its first week.
