The Nokia 6210 Navigator looks like an ordinary slider phone but its navigation functionality will beat your common navigation device.
Loaded with Nokia Maps 2.0 and supporting assisted GPS (A-GPS), the 6210 Navigator smartphone provides pedestrian navigation in addition to in-car navigation — a smart move by Nokia, as many people, myself included, feel the need for navigation when on foot.
Now to the coolest part: the device has an integrated accelerometer and a compass that makes it really easy to follow the map when walking. The built-in compass means that when you turn the device, the map will maintain its orientation. So, no more turning the device and trying to read street names upside-down.
Another cool thing is that the 6210 Navigator can be used for navigation straight out of the box, without a SIM card.
Local maps are preloaded on the 1GB memory card that comes with the device. Nokia Maps 2.0 voice and turn-by-turn guidance is free for the first six months.
Users can download additional maps from Nokia’a Map Loader service, and can also buy multimedia city guides via the Nokia Maps application. The handset also features 120MB of internal storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera with 4 x digital zoom and integrated LED flash, and Bluetooth 2.0.
It also has a built-in FM radio and an MP3 player, which supports MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA, and progressive.
The 2.4 inch, 320x240 resolution display works reasonably well, but compared with many other devices out there today, the screen is quite small for viewing maps, pictures and videos.
The 6210 Navigator comes with a travel charger, a connectivity cable, a software CD-Rom, a 1GB microSD card and Nokia headphones.
I’m a bit annoyed with the proprietary headphones as I would have liked to use the headphones of my choice.
Another disadvantage, for me, is that is doesn’t charge via USB.
Recommended retail price for the 6210 Navigation, which will be available from September 8, is $799 including GST.
