Gen-i predicts 50 percent of business on fibre by 2014

CEO Chris Quin says he can't wait for the company to become an RSP

In three years 50 percent of New Zealand businesses will have migrated from copper to fibre-based services.

That’s according to Gen-i CEO Chris Quin, who was speaking at the NZ Technology Trade and Investment Forum in Auckland yesterday.

“Our view of the world is that well over half of what’s delivered today will be delivered over fibre by that time (2014),” he said.

When asked by Computerworld how much life he thought was left in the copper network, Quin said he didn’t know.

“I don’t have an answer to how much life is in copper because copper is for corporates and consumers. It will be a part of many corporate networks for quite some time, years to come. But the estimate for most corporate organisations is that fibre will be available to them by 2014, based on the build plan and roll out plan we’ve seen.”

Quin, who spent the previous day in Dunedin and Christchurch as part of Telecom’s investor roadshows explaining to shareholders the contents of the 532- page demerger document, says Gen-i is looking forward to becoming a Retail Service Provider.

“We can’t wait for the agility and the freedom it gives us to work as an RSP – we want to go there really fast (with) designs and services and migrations ready for them,” he said.

“(We’re) pretty confident we know what most organisations are going to start using it for and it will be doing what we have today in a better, faster way.”
