New era Gen-i signs customer for FX Networks

Telecom's IT services unit delivers customer for alternative network

Telecom’s IT services unit, Gen-i, is slackening the apron strings that tie it to its parent.

The subsidiary has signed its first customer deal in partnership with alternative network provider FX Networks.

However, Gen-i’s head of emerging technologies, Andrew Allen, says the customer has requested its name not be disclosed.

He says Gen-i has had an agreement in place for some time with FX Networks, though in most cases Gen-i will use Telecom Networks.

“However, sometimes the customer has a preference,” he says.

Asked whether Gen-i has similar deals in place with other network providers, he wouldn’t comment.

FX Networks wouldn’t comment either on who the new customer is.

Meanwhile, Roger de Salis, who founded FX Networks nearly five years ago when he signed a 35-year lease on the fibre optic cable running in parallel with the main trunk line, has resigned.

The company says his departure is amicable, with de Salis wanting to pursue other technical interests.
