Symantec offers backup for SMEs

Back-up software certified for use with Windows Server 2008

Symantec’s Backup Exec 12 and Backup Exec System Recovery 8, released last week, have both been certified in advance for use with Windows Server 2008, giving them a potential marketing advantage over rival products.

Backup Exec backs up application-level data, while Backup Exec System Recovery backs up the current state of the entire system.

“Ours is the only backup and recovery software logo-certified by Microsoft for use with Windows Server 2008,” says Symantec’s Asia-Pacific product marketing manager Kerri Le.

With both products Symantec has tried to make operation less time-consuming and more automated, lending appeal to the small- to-medium enterprise.

Many such organisations find backup a chore and hence do not do it as often as they should, says Steve Martin, mid-market sector manager for the region.

“Surveys show 24% of these businesses are not backing up daily and some are only doing it weekly.”

That increases risk of data loss, he says. One significant problem is the need to mount tapes or burn data onto CD or DVD. The new releases reduce this manual component of backup, Symantec says. Backup Exec System Recovery 8 can transmit the backup data to a remote site via FTP, or to a USB-attached device or even an iPod, says Martin.

A significant innovation with Symantec Backup Exec 12, Le says, is its awareness of the current level of danger from malware.

Symantec maintains a worldwide network of sensors that measure the volume of malware traversing the internet and expresses it as a four-stage threat level, automatically notified to subscribing users. Users can program Backup Exec 12 to react to a rise in alert level by triggering an immediate backup.

The new releases also ease backup and restore of Exchange servers by eliminating the need to back up the contents of mailboxes separately.

“Everything can be done in one pass,” says Le, and individual missing emails can be restored without the need for a time-consuming restore of the whole of the Microsoft Exchange data.
