Symantec signs global agreement with SMX

New Zealand email security company to sell cloud-based solution worldwide

New Zealand email security company SMX has entered into a global agreement with Symantec under which its cloud-based security solution will be sold worldwide.

Symantec’s Brightmail software will be integrated into the SMX anti-spam and anti-virus solution.

The SMX solution targets large international systems integration vendors and ISPs looking for a comprehensive service to offer under their own brand and local infrastructure.

SMX co-founder and CEO Jesse Ball (pictured left with cofounder Thom Hooker) says the company is focusing on regional clouds. That means that data can be retained within a region and kept out of jurisdictions where other laws may apply.

Thus, email would not be routed through countries such as the US where the Patriot Act might apply. Rather, it is scrubbed in the customer’s own country under local law and jurisdiction.

“As an example, working with our market partner in India, CMC, we have just implemented such a solution for Times Group, India’s largest media group,” Ball says.

“They use the service under their own brand and running in their own local data centre but managed remotely by SMX. Our solution was up and running literally within days, tightly integrating an advanced billing and provisioning system.”

Times Group uses SMX to deliver inbound and outbound email filtering for its own staff as well as deploying the service to more than 1 million customers who use hosted email provided by Times Internet, a Times Group subsidiary.

David Dzienciol, Symantec’s vice president SMB and Channels Asia-Pacific and Japan, says the demand for partners to offer cloud-based services is growing at a rapid pace.

“Symantec is focused on providing its partners with superior value, market-leading technologies, and sustainable revenue opportunities to help meet this demand,” he says.

“The SMX partnership demonstrates how partners can leverage Symantec’s technology to deliver innovated cloud-based services offered by international systems integrators and ISPs.”
