Unisys nails large Vodafone ANZ outsourcing deal

Contract a boost after loss of ACC, TelstraClear business

Unisys has signed a major transtasman contract to provide ICT services to Vodafone Australia and New Zealand.

After a competitive tender, the company was awarded the five-year deal last month. It covers:

  • Desktop management, service desk and Wintel server support to more than 4000 Vodafone employees in Australia and New Zealand.

  • Additional back-office services such as PABX, LAN, printer and video conferencing support to Vodafone New Zealand.

  • Callcentre support from its Kapiti command centre for all Vodafone employees in Australia and New Zealand, with additional desk-side and server support staff located physically on-site at Vodafone in Hobart, Sydney and Auckland.

Neither party has disclosed the value of the contract.

Unisys New Zealand managing director Brett Hodgson alluded to the deal in an interview with Computerworld in early December. He said at the time that Unisys was in negotiations with an un-named large multinational and that the outsourcing deal had been driven largely out of New Zealand.

At that stage, Unisys already had a letter of cover and had begun to hire. Unisys was also in the process of doubling the size of its Kapiti datacentre.

The deal will be a boost for Unisys which was displaced at the Accident Compensation Corporation by a consortium led by Gen-i. That consortium also included Sun, iData and Red Rock Consulting.

In another hit last year, TelstraClear also took some services back in-house that Unisys previously provided.
