Late February plan for Wellington broadband

Councillors to consider business case for network build

Wellington City Council staff are working on a business case for the city’s broadband network and looking to a date in late February to present the plan to councillors, says senior strategic adviser Carolina Rodriguez.

The plan will include a financial model and identification of “critical success factors” she says.

If the plan is accepted, the council will then proceed to seek proposals from potential suppliers of network infrastructure.

The initial vision of a local-government-subsidised urban broadband network for Wellington was approved unanimously by Council in March last year — proposing to take broadband as far out as Wellington’s suburbs by 2012.
