LINZ sweeps up last scraps of paper

Latest project targets actions on Crown pastoral lease land

Land Information New Zealand is still digitising its remaining paper records, years after the main geographical and ownership information of land throughout New Zealand was committed to an online database.

The latest group of paper records to be scheduled for conversion are those recording “discretionary actions” on Crown pastoral leases. Such activities include “activities affecting or distributing the soil, burning of vegetation, granting of easements etc,” and must be correctly recorded to ensure compliance with pertinent legislation.

There can be up to 80 such records relating to one piece of land, says LINZ spokesman Chris Bonnett. “It’s not just a matter of [automated] scanning,” he says; the lease records need to be examined by eye to pick out the relevant passages. Some of the task, however, can be done automatically.

A request for proposal has been issued for a company to take on the work with the project scheduled to be complete by June 30.

The digitisation will initially be onto CD but the information will be input from there through a specially built front-end into LINZ’s main database.

The number of Ministerial requests for access to the records has made digitising this particular information a matter of urgency, Bonnett says.
