Orion wins 140th US contract

The company plans to open second US office

Auckland-based Orion Health, provider of clinical workflow and integration technology for the healthcare sector, has won a contract to implement its Rhapsody integration engine at Marion General Hospital in Indiana, in the US.

Marion General will be Orion’s 140th Rhapsody site in North America, of 215 sites worldwide, says chief executive Ian McCrae. Among the clients are the Centres for Disease Control, the US Department of Agriculture, Central Washington Hospital, and New York State Department of Health, he says.

In this particular market space in North America, Orion typically wins at least half of the opportunities that come up, says McCrae. Ease of use, quick installation, and the Java interface are some of the benefits of the solution, he says.

The Rhapsody engine manages message exchange between hospital applications, databases and external systems. There are typically a number of different systems at every hospital site. A typical site would have around 10 major systems and 200 or so smaller applications. Larger facilities could have up to 300 applications, says McCrae.

Rhapsody accepts messages in many formats, from a wide range of sources and then routes the messages to their correct destinations, says McCrae. It allows users to transform data from, for example, an XML message into a PDF or a mail or fax message, he says.

Orion’s US operations continue to grow. A year ago, the company had 42 staff in its Santa Monica office, today it has 65 staff there, of which 20 are Kiwis, says McCrae. He plans to open a second US office, in Boston, at the end of the year. The company has 234 staff worldwide.

Rhapsody has been rated as one of the top integration engines in the health sector in North America by KLAS, an independent healthcare solutions rating company, says McCrae.

Orion also made the North American list of the top 100 healthcare IT providers for the second year in a row. The list, where Orion holds the 77th spot, ranks companies according to their healthcare IT revenue, he says.
