Gen-i to oversee TelstraClear deal

Gen-i is where most of Telecom's project- and account-management capability is, says TelstraClear's head of wholesale

Gen-i will manage the new mobile network deal struck between TelstraClear and Telecom earlier this month, rather than Telecom’s wholesale division.

TelstraClear’s head of wholesale, Raymond O’Brien, says Gen-i is where most of Telecom’s project- and account-management capability is.

“It’s a business-to-business type arrangement”, says O’Brien.

Gen-i won’t have access to any customer details, he says.

“After it’s set up, there won’t be much for Telecom to do — TelstraClear will provide the handsets and do all the [customer] fulfilment and pricing. Telecom won’t go near our customers.”

Katherine Murphy, Telecom’s business PR manager, says while the deal is, strictly speaking, a commercial retail one, “in many ways, it’s a wholesale agreement”.

Gen-i will see that TelstraClear’s needs are met, “but Gen-i will have nothing to do with the customers,” she says.

The deal with Telecom was struck in the wake of the expiry, on June 30, of TelstraClear’s mobile-services agency relationship with Vodafone. Under that arrangement, TelstraClear provided mobile services, on the 029 prefix, using Vodafone’s network. This was so TelstraClear customers could be offered the full spectrum of landline, mobile and internet services.

Current 029 customers are being contacted by Vodafone and will be switched over to Vodafone’s billing system. When the new Telecom-TelstraClear service is launched, 029 customers will have the option of joining it.

The Telecom-TelstraClear deal only covers Telecom’s existing CDMA mobile network and not its planned W-CDMA network, to be launched next year.
