Environmentally friendly server launched

Maker claims low carbon footprint

Fujitsu Siemens has released what it claims is the smallest and quietest server so far, with the lowest carbon footprint currently available.

The Primergy TX120 tower server is aimed at smaller businesses and branch offices. Fujitsu Siemens says it’s suited to office workspaces, along with distributed and SOHO applications such as retail in-store, back office servers and small office application servers.

The system includes either a 1.866GHz Intel dual-core Xeon 3040 processor with up to 4MB of L2 cache and a 1,066MHz FSB, or an Intel Celeron processor. It’ll accept up to 8GB ECC in four DIMMs and accesses up to four 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS hard disks in RAID 0, 1, or 1E configurations. There will also be a 1Gbit/s Ethernet controller onboard and the integrated Remote Management Controller (iRMC) with iRMC advanced pack option.

According to Fujitsu Siemens, the server has:

• The lowest energy use, consuming 40% less energy than conventional tower servers. Specifically, Fujitsu Siemens claims power consumption of 143W with the Xeon option, less when fitted with a Celeron CPU. The company therefore claims a “world-leading carbon footprint” along with lower environmental impact and power consumption, and financial savings.

• The smallest size at one-third the size of standard tower servers: it measures 99mm wide by 340mm high by 399mm deep.

• The lowest noise levels, with noise emissions 50% lower than standard tower servers. This is particularly important for servers that could share space with staff. It produces 28dB while idling and 31dB in operation.

The TX120 ships with Fujistu Siemens’ Server View remote management software, which allows administrators to control the system from afar, a useful benefit for machines destined to spend their time in far-flung branch offices.
