A team from University of Auckland, representing New Zealand, received bronze medals in the 2007 ACM World Finals in computer programming, held in Tokyo Bay on the 15 March.
Team CIA, consisting of students Robert Bowmaker (Computer Systems Engineering), Stephen Merriman (Computer Science) and Andrew Olsen (Software Engineering), came third in the Asia-Pacific region in the contest, beaten by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Overall, the New Zealand team was ranked 11th in the world.
Tsinghua University, China, took the first spot in the Asia-Pacific region and was also second in the overall contest. Warsaw University, Poland, won the overall first prize.
Eighty-eight finalists were chosen from over 6000 teams from regional competitions.
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is an educational and scientific society aiming at uniting the world's computing educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue and share resources. ACM’s International Collegiate Programming Contest is regarded as a very prestigious university competition in computing sciences and engineering.
