Wireless internet provider nzwireless has launched a WiMax service in central Wellington and the Hutt Valley, following a six-month trial involving new and existing customers.
In January, the company took up a 3.5GHz licence to trial the WiMax network.
Initially, the wireless broadband service will be offered as a stand-alone service, but chief executive Chris Aspros says the company will look at offering additional data and IP services.
He says the WiMax network has significantly higher bandwidth capacity when compared with traditional fixed-line ADSL broadband services, and is optimised to provide top speeds, regardless of the number of users online at any one time.
There is a $250 installation fee for a 12-month contract, or a $500 installation fee with no contract. Usage is charged at $80 a month for a 2Mbit/s plan, with a 10Gb limit, and $125 a month for a 3Mbit/s plan, also with a 10Gb limit. An extra $25 a month allows for unlimited traffic.
