Netsafe’s Butterfield first female InternetNZ fellow

Butterfield has contributed positively to the way the internet is used, says InternetNZ

Liz Butterfield, founder of the Internet Safety Group (Netsafe) has been appointed a Fellow of InternetNZ, the first woman to be given the honour.

The fellowship scheme was instituted in 1998, so that InternetNZ could recognise members of the internet industry who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the internet in New Zealand or to the organisation.

Although Butterfield has had nothing to do with the technical or administrative side of the internet, she has undoubtedly contributed positively to the way the internet is used, says InternetNZ president Colin Jackson.

Butterfield now heads Hector’s World, a non-profit company selling a safety device for children using the internet. It takes the form of an animated dolphin, which can be called up by a young user to mask any online material he or she finds disturbing.

All profits made from the sale of the Hector’s World program go to fund Netsafe.
