Acer overtakes Dell

Hewlett-Packard is still number one in all sectors of the PC market

Hewlett-Packard continues to dominate all sectors of the PC market, according to analyst firm IDC’s final figures for the first quarter of the year. However, Acer has displaced Dell at number two, a reflection of market concentration on notebooks, which showed 20.8% growth.

Desktops and x86 servers declined 1.7% and 10.9%, respectively.

After a setback in Q4, the market showed sequential growth of 6.5%, to 134,093 units. Notebooks represented 58,098 of those units.

However, this was not enough to arrest a year-on-year decline, with shipments contracting 1.5%. Desktop shipments fell 14.8% in the quarter.

“As past finance deals and debts begin to catch up with consumers and a weaker dollar limits the potential for significant price drops, the New Zealand PC space will be unable to replicate the significant growth seen over the past two years,” says Liam Gunson, senior analyst for PC hardware.

“While desktops continue to dominate the PC space, in terms of shipments, the market continues to show a preference for the portable form factor.

“This transition to notebooks is made easier in the consumer space where end users are not inhibited by such things as security issues, ROI, and standard operating environments.”

The top five vendor rankings, in order, were: HP, Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo.
