NZ Post splits IT functions

The change is to increase efficiency and accountability for IT

NZ Post’s IT functions have been reorganised, as reported in Computerworld (April 24), following consultation with staff. The CIO role, originally proposed for disestablishment, has been saved however, albeit in a slightly different form.

The IT function, previously a single entity under CIO Nigel Prince, will be divided into three parts. The first, IT Operations, will report to Postal Services; a Group Strategy Unit — led by a new “group CIO” — will report to the chief financial officer; and an IT Innovation Group will report through to Group Strategy and Innovation.

Spokesman Richard MacLean says the change increases efficiency and accountability for IT by positioning it within the Postal Services business, which is already its biggest user.

By enabling the postal business to support itself “end-to-end” from within the business, rather than drawing on a range of corporate services provided by other areas, NZ Post believes it will be able to respond to customer and market demands more effectively, MacLean says.

“In terms of IT, there are no changes to the services provided to or used by Kiwibank or any other Post subsidiaries,” he says.

Ironically, part of the motive for the changes is the challenge faced by the domestic letters business from electronic technology such as email and web-based information.

Both the group CIO role and a general manager of postal services role will be advertised. Computerworld understands Prince is a good prospect for the former slot.
