The system is the first of its kind in New Zealand

Computer interface research centre HIT Lab NZ, at the University of Canterbury, launched its VisionSpace Centre last week. The three-screen stereo projection system is the first of its type in New Zealand.

The system allows groups of people to view and interact with virtual data in new ways, says HIT Lab founder Mark Billinghurst. Viewers wear lightweight polarised glasses to experience the 3D effect, and the system has surround sound to provide a truly immersive environment, says Billinghurst.

There are also portable systems that can be used at other locations.

It is expected that the system will be used for industry research and for education.
