Opera to set up development centre in India

Norwegian company sets up a development centre instead of simply outsourcing

Norwegian web browser developer Opera Software is setting up a development centre in Chandigarh in north India, the company says.

The centre will employ quality assurance testers that support Opera’s full range of products. It will also have Opera’s “Open the Web” evangelists, who will help webmasters and developers create sites that are compliant with open standards, the company says.

The centre will employ about 12 staff in the first year.

The Chandigarh centre will be the fourth centre run by Opera that is focused on core development. The company already has development centres in Oslo, and in Linkoping and Gothenburg in Sweden. It also has some engineering staff working on customer support in Tokyo, Beijing, and San Diego in the US.

A number of internet technology companies including Google and Yahoo already have development centres in India. Rather than outsourcing, Opera decided that opening a local office would be the most efficient way to improve its products while attracting the most skilled employee base, the company says.

While most technology companies have their development centres in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai or Delhi, Opera Software has selected a less popular location, perhaps to have easier access to talent. The decision to locate the development centre in Chandigarh was influenced by staff of Indian origin that work at Opera, the spokesman says.
