Asia-Pacific antivirus conference coming to Auckland

It's a fantastic opportunity for Kiwis with an IT security interest, says spokesperson

The Association of AntiVirus Asia Researchers (AVAR) will hold its annual conference in New Zealand for the first time in December.

The ninth annual conference is expected to draw about 300 delegates from AVAR member organisations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to joint conference sponsors ESET NOD32 and its New Zealand distributor Chillisoft.

At the end of every conference, volunteers wanting to host next year’s conference step forward, says spokesperson Geoff Cossey of Chillisoft.

“ESET has had the interest of sponsoring a major conference for some time, and when ESET and Chillisoft said that we would like to host the conference in New Zealand, it was gladly accepted by the committee members.”

Last year’s conference was held in Beijing.

AVAR is a non-profit organisation that aims to prevent the spread and damage caused by malicious software. Its members are security experts, governmental agencies and companies in nine Asia-Pacific countries, as well as the US and Europe.

“The conference will be a fantastic opportunity for New Zealanders with an interest in IT security to meet and interact with some of the key people in the industry,” Cossey says.

“Some of the senior people have been in the industry for ten to 20 years and they are legends — of course in a very narrow field,” he adds.

The conference’s theme and keynote speakers will be announced next month, says Cossey. The conference, to be held in Auckland, is open to everyone, not just AVAR members.

AVAR's activities include providing information on virus incidents throughout Asia and operating a members’ mailing list, as well as the annual conference.
